JINX! A Random Post

Randomly...

I probably jinxed my fantasy team's championship chances after my recent post about how I was good enough to win it all. A few days later, Danilo Gallinari gets breaks his left thumb and I'm forced to drop him. Derrick Rose might be out for longer than expected too. The worst part is, if I want to have any chance at all of winning, I'm going to have to drop Gallo. And I don't want to. Basketball, in whatever form is about love. I've had Gallo since the beginning. He was one of my prized draft picks. And now, because of his injury, if he stayed on my team, he'd end up a non-factor and worse, a liability. I had to drop him. I've done that before but mostly to players who weren't performing well, not one of my stars. Hopefully, when the season is over, I can pick him up again so that he will be part of my final roster (basically, after the season is over, you can still pick-up players just to have them on your team's final line-up) just so I can look back on my team and smile about all the good memories of he (and his stats) gave me. It was fun while it lasted.

Next, I have determined that getting my hair cut is bad luck and leads to bad days. That is all I will say about this topic.

What else? Hmmm. Just found out that the new Doctor Who companion will be played by a relatively unknown actress named Jenna-Louise Coleman. She was in Captain America playing...someone apparently (my money is one of Bucky's girls at the Stark Expo). Well, she's going to be the most Googled/Wiki'd person in all of nerdom over the next few days. Hope she brings the same energy and enthusiasm (also, hotness) that Karen Gillan brought. It's going to be tough replacing Amy Pond but I hope she does well.

I also just saw the trailer for the new Battlestar Galactica show Blood & Chrome. The trailer was fully of Viper-y action goodness which is a good sign, since I Caprica didn't have any of that. I also did not watch any Caprica for that same reason. If the trailer is any indication, B&C should be more well-received from the get go. So say we all!

Also, it's been in the news recently (well, nerd news) that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles under Michael Bay will have a more out of this world origin. Literally, as he plans on turning our heroes in a half shell into aliens. For the love of nerds everywhere, please stop, Michael Bay. You already gave us Devastator balls and racist robots, don't give us this crap as well. There's no good reason to make this change. Aliens and mutants are practically same to the masses. Don't you like mutants, Michael Bay? Also, THEY'RE CALLED TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. The franchise is named very specifically. Ugh. Come on. You almost ruined Transformers for everyone (can't really call anything with Peter Cullen in it, 'crap,' since you know, he's basically the voice of God), don't do it again.

That's it for now I guess. Hope everyone continues having a good week, or if you're having a bad one, that it turns around. Toodles!

When Life Imitates Art - Doctor Who Style

If you are a fan of Sci-Fi and of good stories in whatever medium in general, you should check out the website io9 and its Morning Spoilers feature (here's the link for the one today). In it, they provide the latest scoop about your favorite TV shows and movies.

The reason I bring this up is because the point of this post comes from their latest bit of Doctor Who news by way of The Press Association. It's actually a quote from series star Matt Smith, who plays the Eleventh Doctor, regarding his co-star, the lovely Karen Gillan, who plays the Doctor's companion, Amy Pond.

Here's the quote:

"She can't die, Amy Pond can't die. No way, I'd be sad. I'd miss Karen. I just think for this particular Doctor, his bond with Amy, I think there's a lot more mileage in it yet. I think there's a long way to go. So I can't see it happening any time soon. Don't worry, I won't let it happen - I'll save her, I'll save the day."

Don't worry, I won't let it happen - I'll save her, I'll save the day.

Fans of the show know how awesome this bit of news sounds and it basically underscores the fact that Smith is perfect for the role. That last line especially, sounds exactly like something the good Doctor himself would say. Suffice it to say, he's been taking notes and has got the role down pat and all Who fans should love him for it.

Long live The Doctor and Amy Pond! Long live Matt and Karen!

Tennant is F*cking Awesome

"Yes because there are laws, there are laws of time. Once upon a time there were people in charge of those laws but they died...they all died! D'you know who that leaves? Me! It's taken me all these years to realize the laws of time are mine! AND THEY WILL OBEY ME!"

And

"We're not just fighting the flood, we're fighting time itself. AND I'M GONNA WIN!"

F*cking brilliant.

Doctor Who

For years, I had been hearing about Doctor Who. How could I not? I'm a geek who frequents internet message boards, of course I'd hear about him. Admittedly, I did not know what all the hullaballo for some seemingly goofy sounding British Superman was all about. Yes, I did hang my geek head in shame. It was my geek-blindspot, sorry. So when I found the DVDs for the first four seasons of the new series, I quickly snatched them out of the bin.

Let me tell you something about this new Doctor Who series: It's f*ckin' awesome. F*ckin' brilliant. Anyone who watches the series knows what I'm talking about. Doctor Who is packed full of aliens and paradoxes and great concepts. Everything about it is fantastic. The TARDIS is the Doctor's sentient timeship that looks like a 1950's police box but is actually quite spacious inside. The Daleks are these R2-D2 looking aliens and are the sworn enemies of the Doctor's species, the Time-Lords. The alien races have wacky names such as the Ood, the Slitheen and the Carrionites. It's science fiction pushed to its limit and then some.

It's this wonderful introspection on what it means to be human from the point-of-view of this god-like being who loves everything humanity is about. In a word, simply, the Doctor is love. Love for traveling. Love for people. Love for life. And it is a breath of fresh air. Instead of focusing on the dark and gritty most modern storytelling focuses on, Doctor Who decided that life was more important. That all you need to face the devil are your wits and a cheery "A-HA!" That companions long gone and come back and meet the new companions and they can all get along. That war is harsh and surviving is harsher but if you try hard enough, you can figure out how to beat despair.

That is what Doctor Who is all about in the end really. Hope. It's about hope. That hope can let you conquer anything. You could be at the end of time and space itself but as long as you have hope, all is not lost. The good Doctor treats our hearts, minds and souls. He makes us better.

Doctor Who is clever and brilliant and most of all, fun. It's inspiring and romantic. If you have never seen the show, give it a chance. Let it surprise you. It's a testament to great television guaranteed to take you on a wacky, amazing journey. Allons-y!
