So You Want a Revolution: Avengers sequel is 'Age of Ultron,' Fans' Heads Explode

San Diego Comic-Con had a heckuva third day with panels and shenanigans from both Warners/DC, Fox and Marvel. That sound you heard this morning was me letting out the manliest shriek in the history of the world, just beating out the last time I shrieked like that around the time they announced Joss Whedon as the director of Avengers and brought the whole cast on stage at Comic-Con a few years back.

Because something crazier topped that, and it was the entirety of the Marvel Studios Panel. 

The Magnificent Seven

Only seven books. Seven on-goings. That's it. Minis and events are another thing. But if I had to choose just seven on-goings to read for the rest of my days, these are those seven.

7. Green Lantern Corps
For as long as Peter Tomasi is the writer, I will stand by this book. For as long as Kyle Rayner is a main character featured in this book, I will not drop it. Amen.

6. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man
Brian Michael Bendis was born to re-create Spider-Man for a new generation of readers. This is the single Peter Parker I want to read about. He's young and cocky and inexperienced and just still a kid. He makes mistakes, dozens of them each issue but I don't care. Because that's what kids do. What makes him a hero is that he never stays down for long. He fights back. Well, he'll fight back after he whines a bit but that's part of his charm. It also helps that the artists on this book have been top-notch. Mark Bagley, Stuart Immonen and David Lafuente have all made their mark on these pages and they're all just pretty pictures.

5. Secret Warriors
4. Fantastic Four
Jonathan Hickman's two Marvel books. He's just started on both (11 issues for Secret Warriors, 5 for Fantastic Four) but I'm already in love. Crisp dialogue and intriguing plots. Great characterization and awesome moments. What more could you ask for?

3. Guardians of the Galaxy
What can I say, Rocket Raccoon might just be the best thing about this book. So is Star-Lord. So is Drax. You know why writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have such a great book? Great characters. I keep on coming back to see what new adventures the Guardians have gotten themselves into this team. On paper, they have enough power to rival any of Earth's mightiest but most of the time, they're outclassed in the depths of space. That's what makes them fun. That a team with a space-mage, a giant, talking tree and more telepaths than the X-Men is still outgunned by the nasties of the universe and then some and they don't care. They'll still kick your ass.

2. New Avengers
Marvel's flaghship book by their highest profile writer. Bendis has taken the Avengers concept and turned it on its head. It's new-age cinematic scope mixed with heart and character. And aliens. And ninjas. And super powerful mutants. And evil gods from other dimensions. And lots and lots of fun.

1. Nova
Abnett and Lanning's first cosmic book. Why is it so awesome? They turned Richard Rider into this generation's Peter Parker. 'Nuff said.

Comicbooks Make Me Smile

Wow. My wallet is much lighter now, haha. So worth it though!

Comicbooks cost a lot, true. But as I've said time and time again, nothing beats a good read. When the imagery and the words manage to marry so perfectly together, that's magic right there, and it can leave a lasting impact on the reader. The image will stay with you for a long time and it helps to have something great to remember when times are tough. And that's why I love comicbooks.

This week's haul was bigger than usual and going through all of them would take too much time but rest assured, there were so many awesome moments that brought a smile to my face. Incredible Hercules really made me laugh, Guardians mixed everything so well, Nova was awesome as usual...They're good books you know?

Here's to the books, the industry and the creators. The fans appreciate everything, clones and costume redesigns, nonwithstanding.

Good Day (Which is also the title of a very underrated Click Five song)

Yes, I listen to the Click Five. I liked them better with original lead-singer Eric Dill though. Yes, I went out of my way to find out the guy's name. He's kinda good-looking and I really dig his voice.

Something happened early in the day that I thought was very cool. Yay.

FINALLY got my books. As usual, they all kicked ass. Bummed that my shop didn't have The Avengers FCBD issue though. Damn it. Also, I have to say, Bendis and Deodato's Dark Avengers? That's a pretty good book right there. Very good. New Avengers, I still love. The other usual suspects, Nova, Guardians, Captain Britain, all stand out books. Make Mine Marvel!

On Comicbooks...

On Dark Avengers...

Solid art. I've always been a fan of Mike Deodato. Even if I understand some of the criticisms and complaints about the book (that it's a rip off of Busiek's Thunderbolts, generic Bendis-bashing, etc.), I have to say, I really like it. Something about the way Bendis is writing Norman...I mean, I really like this version of Gobby. And I kinda like the dynamic between these so-called Avengers. It's interesting, what can I tell ya.

On Guardians of the Galaxy...

I thought I wouldn't enjoy the two issues focusing on just Phyla, Drax and Moondragon. But I did. I thought I'd miss the team and I did. But I was okay with it. Art's been subpar since Pelletier left but Wes Craig did an OK job on his arc. The writing was great, especially in issue 12, the banter between Maelstrom, Wendell and Drax. Can't wait for the WoK tie-ins! They've got like 12 team members now! Peter, Jack, Rocket, Groot, Bug, Mantis, Vance, Adam, Phyla, Gamora, Heather and Drax. Boy that's a strong group. Send them to Earth and you've got enough power (Adam, Phyla, Heather), bruisers (Drax, Groot, Gamora) and wild cards (Rocket, Mantis) to take on anybody.

On Nova...

Richard Rider, protector of the universe. It says something that this is the only comic I'm picking up ('sides Ultimate Spider-Man) focusing on a single hero. I love Nova and now that Andrea di Vito's on it, I don't think I'm dropping this book anytime soon.

On New Avengers...

I really need Luke to cut loose. Like really cut loose and kick ass. I know he does this on the regular, but I really would like to see a Luke Cage Avengers moment. Like, when we solidify his place as an Avenger, the moment where he does something worthy of the Avengers name. C'mon Luke! Also, can we get Stuart Immonen on the book already? I don't like Bachalo's style and Billy Tan is too scratchy.

On Captain Britain and MI13...

DRACU-FRAKKIN'-LA! Say no more! The baddies are here and it's going to take a helluva an effort to get them out of Britain and I'm sure reading about it is going to be something. Paul Cornell is a genius.

Today was the day I did something that I will not speak of directly for fear of ridicule and on the off chance that the person whom I did said thing to reads this blog and discovers the behind-the-scenes of the thing I did. Also, I have terrible grammar apparently.

You know, I have to become a better person. In everything. I am failing at so many things. Literally and metaphorically. I am failing. I must not fail! I am not a failure. I am many things but not one of those things is a failure. I gotta step it up.

Oh yeah. Danny's an all-star! He's a bonafide all-star this year and I hope this is the first of many all-star game selections to come. Congratulations Danny Granger!

Lost + Battlestar Galactica + Spectacular Spider-Man + Supernatural + The Office + Entourage + Friday Night Lights = One of the finest seasons of television ever.

The preview of Guardians of the Galaxy #10 is up on CBR. I am loving those first few panels.

Saw the second Transformers trailer. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE. Please please please please let it be the greatest thing ever. "Constructicons, merge for the kiiillll!"

- San Miguel just lost. Boo. That means I'm cheering for Alaska the rest of the way!

- Have I mentioned lately how much I am love Danny Granger? Yes? Hoo-boy that Danger Granger. I'd even take him over LeBron. Haha.

- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, I hafta say, not a bad movie. Not bad at all. Rhona Mitra is no Kate Beckinsale but she is not hard to look at either.

- I am now Casey Carlson's number 1 fan. If you get to read this Miss Casey, I totally support you. I can't vote for you, since I don't live in the US but know that I'll be promoting you like crazy here in the Philippines.

- Picked up Dark Avengers and Mighty Avengers over the weekend. Great stuff going on there. If Bendis can keep it up, this series is gonna be great. The line-up over there in Mighty, I'll have to get used to that. Pym is great. Young Avenger Vision and Hercules are great too. If they really can keep the Hulk, Iron Man and Scarlet Witch on the team, then that'll be nice. The rest of the team, Jocasta, US Agent, Stature, not so sure about them. Green Lantern Corps was solid mostly because Kyle was so bad ass in that one. Green Lantern was kinda meh for me. Hal turning into the rainbow lantern would be very goofy. Oh and Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Britain and the MI 13 were awesome as well. Can't wait for Dracula and Doom, Rocket Racoon versus Blastaar.
